Limoneira has had a presence in Ventura County since 1893, laying the foundations of a thriving California citrus industry right here along the Central Coast. Limoneira, as a global leader in citrus production, is heavily invested in improving the health of our soils and sustainably stewarding land, as both an economic and environmental strategy. They are always looking for new ways to increase the capacity of their orchards to withstand drought conditions, fight off invasive pests, and regenerate the soil for future plantings.
In June of 2019, the Limoneira Company was awarded funding to study and demonstrate the use of compost (an organic and living soil amendment) and mulch (a carbon rich ground-cover) on a citrus orchard in Santa Paula. This project, funded by the California Healthy Soils Program, will conduct research on these soil-building practices, with particular attention to ecosystem services, water quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil health. Their team will be looking at the capacity of mulch and compost to reduce the need for imported water and synthetic fertilizer, enhance on-farm water use efficiency, improve water quality and drawdown atmospheric carbon-- as both a climate change adaptation tool and mitigation tool.
Through this project, the Limoneira Company will partner with the Ventura County Resource Conservation District, the Community Environmental Council, and the UC Cooperative Extension to study these various benefits and demonstrate them to farmers in the region and the larger Ventura County community. The Demonstration site is right off of West Telegraph Road in Santa Paula (12390 West Telegraph Road). Please turn onto Edwards Ranch Road (across from Olive Road) and park in the dirt area on the right. Signs will lead you to the demonstration site.
